Summer Olympics 2008 about to begin in Beijing

The Olympics are set to begin in Beijing, China later this week.  In the past, I have not cared too much about the Olympic games, neither summer games nor winter games.  But something about this year's games has piqued my interest.  It probably has something to do with the Olympics being held in China, and the expansive high definition coverage of the event.

NBC has the broadcasting rights to the Olympics this year, and they are taking full advantage of it.  All coverage of the Olmypics should be in high def, giving a justification reason for everyone that purchased a HDTV in the recent years.  Since NBC is aired by local affliates through the air waves, most everyone should be able to watch the Olmypics in high definition using a HDTV and an antenna.  Those without a TV can also catch the games streamed online at http://www.nbcolympics.com.

Having the Olympics in China is questionable.  I'm not too high on the human rights issue and do not care much about the Tibetans or Darfur.  I think it sucks, but I'm not going to protest on the streets or stop buying Chinese made products.  There are a lot of things that suck in the United States, so why can't we fix the US first?

Another interesting tidbit that has caught attention is the doping allegations and scandals.  After Marion Jones was stripped of her medals, a US Men's track relay team was also stripped of their medals for banned substance use.  US athlete Dana Torres is a 41 swimmer competing in the Olympics.  Many people are questioning how she is able to compete effectively at such an old age. If she wins a Gold medal, look for doping allegations to explode in the media.
