Bay Meadows

Located in San Mateo, this venue has a rich tradition in horse racing. One of the most known tracks in the Bay Area. In fact, Bay Meadows has its own Caltrain stop, making the place easily accessible for the public.

Once you enter, there will be three major areas in front. To the right is a stable area where the horses for the upcoming races are paraded in front of the crowd. In the center is the information desk where you can purchase race packets and ask questions. To the left is where all the betting happens.

There really is no point to watch the horses in the stables, unless you have a decent idea on how healthy a horse looks. Although, it is a good spot to snap a picture or two.

The information desk sells various pamphlets including a racing guide listing all the races for the day. If you want to bet on races happening outside Bay Meadows, you should pick the guide up. If you're planning to bet on races in Bay Meadows, I would recommend just winging it. Those two dollars saved can go towards a bet!

The betting area is split into two sections, both have betting windows and betting machines. The side which is closer to the exit is for hardcore betting. There are rows of desks facing large television screens in a darkened room. The area close to the track is brightly lit; the majority of visitors would be in this area.

Situated in the middle of the betting area is a food stand selling the usual sports' eats--beer, soda, hotdogs, and nachos. The hotdogs are very small, about the length of your palm. Again, if you eat beforehand, you won't need to spend anything here. Each dollar saved can go towards a higher bet!
