Over the work week, the San Francisco Giants faced the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates and were swept in a three-game series. The games began at 4pm PST, making things difficult for the West-coast fans to watch the game. Good going, MLB schedule-makers.
Tuesday, May 6, 2008 :: Giants 6 - Pirates 12
The Pirates jumped on Jonathan Sanchez, putting up a 9-run lead before the Giants scored. Sanchez's career record against the Pirates was pitiful and this outing didn't help matters either. The only batters able to hit Zach Duke were the veterans on the team; as the young kids failed mightily at getting any contact. Nate McLouth stayed hot for the Pirates, clubbing two homeruns and seriously helping my fantasy team.
Wednesday, May 7, 2008 :: Giants 1 - Pirates 3
Barry Zito returned to the Giants starting rotation after skipping one start in a decision made by the Giants' management to have him face the lesser hitting Pirates team and also to avoid a start in San Francisco in front of the hostile home crowd. Zito pitched well, working his offspeed pitches effectively and throwing a fastball in the mid-80s. The only mistake he made was against Xavier Nady which resulted in a two-run homer. The Giants offense that day was anemic, so the runs scored stood up to give Zito his 7th loss of the season.
Thursday, May 8, 2008 :: Giants 4 - Pirates 5
The Giants needed Matt Cain to step up and stop the losing streak they were currently on and Cain did just what was needed of him. Not only did he pitch well into the 7th inning, he also helped his cause with an RBI-single. Unfortunately, he was left in the game too long and the Pirates were able to build a comeback. Taschner came in and allows his first inherited runner to score which became the lead run. Once again, a tough luck game for Matt Cain.
After having played against the Pirates, one thing jumps out for the Giants. The Giants cannot hit left-handed pitching.
